Proof was the first play I have attended at MJC. I thought the theater department did an excellent job at producing it. Being that the play took part on a proscenium stage, and given the size of the theater, in addition to being in row B I felt very connected to the actors and actresses. The actors performed marvelously. I thought it was amazing that the play interacted so well with only one backdrop. Catherine was excellent in her role, acting back and fourth between anger, depression, love and hate. She has very good qualities about her and looked as if she had been acting for a long time. I had a feeling that the profanity did not belong in the play, I felt like it was thrown in just for the cause. It looked strange when the actors would cuss, it did not look natural as if they almost had to force it out of their mouths.

The character Hal had a lot of humor about him. He was entertaining to watch and funny to listen to. I thought he played his part well, but was not as good as Robert. Robert, in my opinion, was the best actor on the stage. He was very elegant in the way he presented himself, and had such a power when he delivered his role. Robert was the best actor, but I could not stand Claire. I didn’t think she was good and was a very annoying character. Her voice was very unwelcome when she spoke. Every time that it was her turn to talk I would cringe in my seat. I may be mistaken in my judgment due to the fact that I am not a theater major, but this is my feeling on her skills. Many of the actors were believable, but I did not feel that Robert made his impairment look convincing.

Most of the actor could not perform their roles without the help of their counterparts. Many scenes, such as Robert and Catherine arguing, would not have conducted themselves well without the help of both actors. All the actors acted professional and presented themselves properly. I was shocked with the kissing scenes. There was a lot of intimacy and touching throughout the performance. The actors must be very close off the set as they are on it.

I thought that there was an idea about the production, but it was the viewer’s job to determine what it was. The director of the production never told the audience what was happening during the movie, but after looking at the scene it was easy to see where the story was going. I think that the kissing played a big part in the play. It stuck out the most and was a huge factor in determining where the play was going.

I thought that the play ran smoothly. All the elements seemed to run together. The props helped a lot in the production. I really enjoyed the opening scene, with the Champaign bottle. It was enjoyable to know that the actors were not used to drinking and that not everything goes as planned. An example of everything not going as planned was when Catherine spilled the Champaign on the floor and spilled it on herself, I think that mishaps like those result in a good play, which makes it, look natural.

For the type of play, the scenery was sufficient. I liked how the inside of the house was visible from the outside; I felt it gave the audience a closer feeling to the play itself. The whole play took place “outside of the house” which was fantastic for the dialogue and acting. The colors of the house started to become very plain. I think that in the future, the house should have interesting designs that capture the audience’s eye. But Proof was a sort of dark play. Catherine was always mad at something, mad her father died, mad her sister wanted to take her to New York, mad she had no boy friend, and mad that she thought she was becoming like her father. That is one of the reasons for the solid color of green.

The costumes set the mood for the scenes. The play involves three young adults and an elderly man. The costumes fit the personalities of each character perfectly. Claire was always in business suits, Catherine’s clothes represented her being lost in life, Hal was a college grad and a nerd, and Robert was a matured man who was losing his mind. Every costume helped the audience understand the importance of the role and analyze the scenes importance.

I thought that the lighting gave the audience a feel for the scene. The lights were bright during the happy parts of the play. During the flashbacks to when Catherine was heading off to college, she looked so happy and the light would reflect off the clothes that she wore giving a more comforting look. The lighting was also changed when the moods of the characters changed. When Catherine and her father were fighting, the light tone was very different then the opening of the play when her father was dead. A lot of the lighting was unrealistic, due to the setup of the stage, but I think that the lighting crew realized this and tried to work around it. The lighting followed the actors, which made their faces visible to the audience. The only time that I was unable to fully see a character was when his back was turned to the audience, other than that everything was fine.

The text was no Shakespeare, but it did a fine job when getting the idea of the play out to the audience. Much of the text was told by the tone of voice that each actor possessed. When a character was yelling or talking regular, the text was put into different perspective, it gave the dialogue more meaning.

After finding out the major role each character was in charge of, I could put the whole play into perspective. The lines made more sense when I knew the personalities that each character possessed. I am sorry to say that I did not identify myself with any of the characters, Robert was crazy, Catherine was unstable and confused, Hal was a nerd who likes math, my worse subject, and Claire seems so upper class like she is better then everyone around her. But I thought the theater department earned my dollar, the play was good.

Dante Alighieri wrote La Divina Commedia in the early fourteenth century. Edgar Allan Poe wrote the “Adventure of Hans Pfaall” in the early nineteenth century. Two works with more than five hundred years of separation in creation yet, two works whose central theme is one in the same, the idea of transcending the confines of this world and rising to the unknown. The dictionary defines transcendence as 1: a state of being or existence above and beyond the limits of material experience, or 2: the state of excelling or surpassing or going beyond usual limits. In the course of these two works the main characters both make journeys to the moon, but both for plainly different reasons. One could also argue that the two works parallel the two definitions given just above. The purpose of this essay is to compare the idea of transcendence as it is presented in Dante’s “Paradiso” with the way it is presented in Poe’s “Adventure of Hans Pfaall”.

In the “Paradiso” Dante is a traveler of sorts making a journey not of the body, but more of the mind. One could argue that the first part of the definition given above is the type of transcendence that Dante is partaking in. For Dante the reason for going to the moon was not one of travel or exploration, but one of knowledge. A way to get closer to the creator himself, the beginning of all knowledge. In Dante’s travel to the moon indeed as he is rising off the material world in canto 1 he is transcending more toward his goal of rising to immortality and the chance to come face to face with the creator of all knowledge. In lines sixty-seven to seventy two of canto 1 it states:

“And as I looked, I felt begin within me
what Glaucus felt eating the herb that made him
a god among the others in the sea.
How speak trans-human change to human sense?
Let the example speak until God’s grace
grants the pure spirit the experience.

The ideas presented there in describe in detail the very essence of the first definition of transcendence. In the first stanza quoted Dante is talking of Glaucus, a fisherman, whose catch suddenly revived and leapt into the ocean after eating some of the herb it had been set on and turned into a god. He is describing himself becoming more of an immortal and leaving more of his material self behind. He is also stating the difficulty in translating this experience, which is beyond material scope, into a form that the non-enlightened can understand. Dante ends this section saying this inadequate example is going to have to suffice until God sees fit that the common man can witness this journey. In lines thirty-seven to forty two of canto II it states:

If I was a body (nor need we in this case
conceive how one dimension can bear another,
which must be if two bodies fill one space)
the more should my desire burn like the sun
to see that Essence in which one may see
how human nature and God blend into one.

These stanzas state Dante’s urge to be one with god. In the first stanza he is describing the phenomena that two bodies cannot occupy the same space at the same time. Yet as he ascends toward God, his being becomes one with the creator of all that he seeks. This in itself speaks of existence beyond the material experience as in the first part of the definition.

The work by Edgar Allan Poe entitled “Adventure of Hans Pfaall” is definitely a journey of the body and not that of the mind as was the case in Dante. In this story Poe’s character Hans Pfaall intends to distance himself from his problems by travelling to the moon where none of the creditors that are after him can remotely come close. Hans Pfaall decides that the best course of action for a man in his position it to remove himself from the problem. He sets to doing this through a trip to the moon and subsequent letter back to his “Excellencies” asking to be pardoned for his crimes. As should be obvious the reason for Hans Pfaall to make the journey to the moon is much more material than intellectual although it does take much intellect to get to the moon. The second definition of transcendence states: the state of excelling or surpassing or going beyond usual limits. In the story this is exactly what Hans Pfaall accomplishes. He travels to the moon where no one to this date has been thus surpassing or going beyond usual limits. The end of the story leaves the inhabitants of Rotterdam skeptical of his ever making the journey for different reasons none the least of which that he had been seen in a different town in a local pub. The story though whether true or not still describes a transcendence to the before unattainable moon.

Transcendence, a state of being or existence above and beyond the limits of material experience, or the state of excelling or surpassing or going beyond usual limits, as described in both of these stories is a trip of a journey to the moon. Although the characters of the stories leave the earth for different reasons and goals the end result is the same, a journey to the moon. For one it is a journey of spiritual enlightenment and for the other it is a journey for freedom from material worth.

We traveled to Colombia to experience all that Colombia had to offer. Colombia is a beautiful but dangerous country filled with breath taking landscapes, diverse cultures, and a unique history. The country has a rich history stemming from the native people of Colombia and the Spanish. Colombia was settled by Spain with the formation of aristocratic estates. A history of violence has been present in Colombia since its independence in 1821 from Spain. There was a civil war in 1921, another from 1899 to 1903 and yet another in 1948-57. Most of these wars involved two rival political parties, the Liberals and Conservatives. Presently there are numerous small guerrilla and drug gang wars. The prevalent drug industry is suggested to amount to a large part of the country’s national income. The operators of this industry are believed to bribe government officials. Colombia is being aided by the United States and other countries in their promotion of peace, war against the narcotics industry, revival of the economy, improvement for the respect of human rights, and strengthening the democratic and social institutions of the country.

Colombia is a democratic country; yet even with democratic elections held violence still is widespread The Presidency is alternated because of the negotiated compromise between the Liberal and Conservative parties. There are also left wing guerillas and a powerful criminal element in the shape of the Cocaine dealers who have used the profits of their illegal trade to buy land and legitimate businesses, and also becoming a political power. The United States also holds and influence on the country by trying to limit or eliminate the drug trade, by trying dealers in the United States. The Constituent Assembly drew up a new constitution trying to fix some of the problems and violence that Colombia has.

Colombia has an important agricultural economy, including coffee, but it is suggested that Colombia’s largest industry is the illegal processing and distribution of Cocaine and Marijuana, mostly to the United States and Europe. The money from the drug industry affects the whole society many of the countries wealthy include the notorious drug dealers.

When thinking of “Colombian” food we Americans often think of burritos, tacos, enchiladas, or chimichangas, but Colombian dishes contain chicken, beef, fish, rice, potatoes, yuca, plantains, soup, and juice just to name a few. Most combination plates at a Colombian restaurant consist of meat served with potato, yuca or plantain, a small portion of salad, a bowl of soup, and juice. Restaurants are inexpensive in Colombia but as we say in America, “ The best cooked meal is a home cooked meal.”

Listen to the music! Not everyone listens to American music there are several varied musical forms in Colombia which include Vallenato, the Cumbia, Bolero, and Salsa. The Vallenato is an extremely popular Afro-Colombian music originating from Valledupar. The song form modulated with the times, taking on a mild rock rhythm for dancing. Cumbia is another Afro-Colombian rapid beat. These songs are typically light hearted. Bolero is usually a deeper, romanticized love song. Its roots originally stem from Cuba, but gained popularity in Colombia from 1919. Salsa is, like the bolero, a transplant. From its most popular base in Cali, it has impacted the rest of Colombian culture with its high-energy salsa dance form. But there are also some American influenced music including rap, country, techno, and R&B.

Entertainment tonight! Colombia has many activities including historical and artistic museums. Beautiful beaches line the coasts of Colombia and rainforest engulf some of the inlands. Soccer and bullfighting are the predominant sports in Colombia. Colombia comes is alive with music everywhere. Nights in Colombia are brought to life with blaring music in the streets and restaurants and nightclubs on every street corner. This is the hotspot.

Colombia is made up of many positive and negative things that make it unique and different from the rest of the world. So let’s go already.

Many people do not know why the Panama Canal was built or what the troubles were in building it. Many people believe it was built for control over the oceans or having a stronger military. This paper will explore the problems and the importance of building the Panama Canal.

The Panama Canal was completed in the year 1914 and is ranked as one of the world’s greatest achievements. The United States built the Panama Canal as a cost off 380 million dollars. For ten years, thousands of workers worked on it.

It was during the Spanish American war when many had learned that there should be a canal built across the Central America isthmus. Theodore Roosevelt became the President of the United States in 1901. Roosevelt believed that the United States needed a strong navy who could patrol the oceans of the world. In Roosevelt’s mind the canal was the perfect idea to make it easier for the navy to move between oceans and become stronger. During Roosevelt’s presidency he devoted himself to building the Panama Canal.

The first step in building the canal was to get an O.K. with Colombia because at that time Panama had belonged to them.

The United States had the Hay-Pauncefote Treaty, which gave them sole right to build and operate the Panama Canal. The same treaty also provided that the United States would give Colombia an initial payment of 10 million and pay 25,000 annual rent for use of the zone. Roosevelt wanted the government of Columbia to sign the treaty, but many Colombians thought it was unfair. Although the treaty sounds pretty tempting the Colombian legislature refused to approve the treaty because they felt is was not enough money. Many Panamanians did not like being part of Colombia and wanted their independence. United States sided with Panama to support Panama’s Rebellion against Colombia. The revolution lasted three days and Panama had won their independence twelve days later Panama signed the treaty with the U.S. to have the Panama Canal built.

The greatest obstacle in building the Panama Canal was disease. The Isthmus of Panama was one of the most disease-ridden areas in the world. When the Americans took over to build the canal many diseases took the lives of laborers. Roosevelt realized the job would never get done if workers were getting sick and dying. After his realization Roosevelt sent a world famous expert on tropical disease to Panama to lead the fight against yellow fever and Malaria. Dr William Gorgas had earned his good reputation by completely wiping out yellow fever in an island in Cuba. Unfortunately Gorgas did not get the job done right away in Panama because in 1905 there was an outbreak of yellow fever that caused a panic in the Canal Zone. Many workers left the country and the Canal Construction came to a hold. Dr. Gorgas had a sanitary department with 4,000 workers who worked hard to eliminate the mosquitoes that spread yellow fever. By 1906, Dr. William Gorgas had completely wiped out yellow fever and eliminated the rats that carried the bubonic plague. Between the years of 1906 and 1914 he reduced the number of malaria cases by 90%. The Panama Canal was certainly ready for some more building.

Many thought the diseases was enough and nothing else could go wrong, but there was still a tremendous problem that came up in Panama. Americans were building the Panama Canal according to the French Plan (The French tried to build the canal before the Americans and failed.) the French Plan called for waterway to move at sea level from end to end. That part of the plan was impossible. Roosevelt ignored the impossibility to build the canal so he stayed with the idea of having a sea level canal. But by 1905 John Stevens was the chief engineer of the Panama Canal. He had changed Roosevelt’s mind to building a lock canal that would be less digging.

The Chagres River was another large and dangerous obstacle the Americans overcame. I was the largest river in Panama and with rainfall it could destroy almost everything in its path including the canal. The lock canal plan had solved that problem. It called for a dam and the river was backed up behind the dam creating Gatun Lake. The American’s were able to control the wild river enough to make it part of the canal. This was part of the canal required no excavation and saved Americans time and money.

Although the Americans were saving time and money there was still a greater challenge over their heads. It was called the Cordillera Mountains and tremendous digging had to be done. It turned out to be the most difficult, dangerous, and heart breaking part of the job. The builders had to remove earth and rock. The removal was done by hand with picks and shovels, but mostly with dynamite and heavy machinery. The dynamite they worked with was unstable in the heat and had cause death to the builders with explosions, debris, and fire. Digging through the mountains mudslides had become a serious problem. Many acres of mud destroyed steam shovels, railroad tracks and filled up the bottom of the mountain that had just been dug out. The mudslides meant more digging and most workers thought the digging would never end.

Some workers had living conditions provided for them in Panama, which made up for risks and discomforts many of them had. The workers had comfortable houses, free medical care, good food, higher salaries, and inexpensive clothing. Good schools were provided for children along with churches and social clubs. Many of the workers were not Americans. The majority of the workforce was black and did not have the provided living conditions like other workers. They were often paid less and lived in the shacks in the jungle or a crowded slum.

Although there were many delays the canal was completed six months ahead of schedule. The S.S. Ancon made the first official passage through the Panama Canal. The boat was decorated with bright flags and it sailed from the Atlantic to the Pacific and made the reality of the canal slogan, “The Land Divided is the World United”.

The Panama Canal is a vital commercial and military waterway. About 12,000 vessels travel through the canal a year. Many of the ships carry about 168 million short tons annually. The most frequent users are the Americans who are traveling to or from the United States. Other users are Canada and Japan. Huge quantities of war materials and thousands of troops passed through the canal during World War II, The Korean, and the Vietnam War.

The Panama Canal still stands today and is in use. It is the greatest accomplishment of the 20th century. It is a masterpiece of engineering and as smoothly today as it did in 1914. It was still built in spite of the difficult work and working conditions. Stevens, Gorgas, and Gothals are the best-known heroes of the canal but were the only ones. Many of the workers received medals for their commitment, hard work, and dedication.

The autobiography of Nelson Mandela Long Walk To Freedom is a intriguing account of the tribulations that he endured throughout his life time. This is a life work that spans from the childhood of a country kid to the unjust trial and incarceration of a political prisoner. By writing this book Madba, Nelson’s clan name, fulfilled two purposes the first of which was to inform others of the South African struggle for racial equality , and the second was to inspire other to take up the struggle.

Nelson began his book by informing his reader of his ethic association with the Xhosa. His merger beginning as a country boy only gave one indicator of the impact he would make as an instigator of change for his people it was his name Rolihlahla which is commonly taken to mean trouble maker. However from the very start Mandela enjoyed an elevated status in life. He was born to one of the lesser wives of a Chief, whose lineage is some sort of way connected to the Thembu royal house. In those early years Mandela looked to his father for guidance and inspiration naturally as any son he tried to patent himself after the his father.

One could say Mandela inherited his rebellious characteristics from his father. It was his challenge of the status quote in the form of that local magistrate; this in turn caused him to be deprived of his chieftainship and fortune. This was the first but by no means the last time in Mandela life where challenging authority would jeopardizes his lively hood. Also at this point in the Mandela made an very important point that he personally believes “nurture, rather than nature , is the primary molder of personality“. While Nelson was yet a laid of nine, when his father died, it is not clear in the book of what but he asked for tobacco points to the possibility of cancer. Although Nelson attended school while his father was alive it was only after his death, when he was sent to live with the regent in Mghekezweni did the modest country boy’s life began to be oriented in such away that would bring it into with his freedom fighter destiny It was here that Mandela first meets Justice, the regents son and future heir, together these two would make the transition from adolescences to manhood. At the age of sixteen along with the other members of his “age/gender group”, a concept that holds great significances within the Xhosa cultural, Nelson under went minor surgical procedure known as circumcision. This was suppose to mark the end of childhood and the beginning of manhood. However Mandela remarked that “Looking back, I know that I was not a man that day and would not truly become one for many years.” Nelson eventually finished his education and became a practicing lawyer; however it was his work outside the courtroom that would lead to his subsequent imprisonment.

Apartheid a phase first coined by Dr. Daniel Malan, stands for the systematic oppression of the majority African’s by the minority of whites in South Africa.. This was what the movement stood so firmly against. Mandela was no different, equality he felt surly was virtuous enough to fight for. However it was Mandela’s influential position as one of the figure heads within the organization known as the African National Congress or ANC which was responsible for him being charged with treason. On December 5, 1956 Nelson Mandela was arrested at his home in front of the children for the crime of High Treason. A political activist yes but by no uncertain means was Mandela and his fellow comrades, “coincidently” all members of the ANC who held prominent leadership positions within the organization, the ruthless communist who wanted nothing more than power and wealth as the state try and fail to paint them as. By the time the trial had just reached the preliminary stages the arrest count swelled to one hundred fifty-six which encompassed almost the whole executive leadership of the ANC.

Many students are frustrated by scholarship essay writing, but there are some things you need to know to make a great success out of your scholarship essay writing. The first thing is to follow all the instructions provided. Most students will fail to get scholarships due to not following instructions more than any other reason. Many students will apply incorrectly, fail to cover the right topics, not have the required page or word count, or exceed the word and page count of the scholarship request. Each of these types of errors in scholarship essay writing is easy to avoid when you review the instructions for the scholarship carefully.

In addition, many students will want to write any number of things that do not belong together in the scholarship essay. Keep in mind that the scholarship essay is like any other essay and must have a single topic sentence that will be the defining point of your essay. This sentence should be clear and concise and provide the reader with the information that is actually in the essay itself. Once you have written the topic sentence, the essay must cover that topic sentence and avoid losing site of the topic sentence focus.

Finally, developing a great scholarship essay requires a sense of the topic that you must write about – if you are not a single mother it is probably not a good idea to write about being a single mother, most scholarships are designed to fit the particular need of the topic they suggest for the scholarship, and writing about something you are not familiar with is not the best approach to getting your scholarship.

George Washington is a man that will never be forgotten in American history. Many Americans see his face just about everyday without even realizing it. His picture is on the One Dollar Bill and the Quarter. His name is just about everywhere, whether it’s schools, towns, counties, states or even the capitol. I think that he deserves this praise because he was a loyal man that helped form America. He was also very brave and intelligent and could stay under control in tough situations. Without him America wouldn’t be what it is today.

George Washington was very loyal. He was loyal to his friends, the American citizens, and even his wife. He was loyal to his friends because even though he was friends with both Jefferson and Hamilton, and no matter how different their thoughts or ideas may have been he never was biased or took sides. He also listened to what the American citizens had to say about certain issues and wasn’t quick to judge people. George Washington was loyal to his wife because when he became president he was even more famous than he was before and no matter how many women were after him he stayed loyal to Martha and didn’t cheat on her.

George Washington was also very brave and intelligent. He had fought in a war before he became President. He was also a good leader when he lead attempted to lead his army against the angry farmers in the Whiskey Rebellion. I believe that it was very brave for him to do this because many people were against him and rebelling and no matter what he still stood up for what he believed in and that the law was right.

I believe that one of the best traits about George Washington and something that many Americans admire him for is the way that he could think fast on his feet, and stay calm in tough situations. He was in many situations where he had to do this wether it was making a decision about the law, trying to settle one of Jefferson and Hamilton’s disagreements, or even making the decision to free his slaves. I think that this trait also involved many others such as intelligence and bravery.

As you can see not only did George Washington hold America together in its early days, he also had many great traits about him. This is why I believe that it’s right to have George Washington on the One Dollar Bill and the Quarter, and have the capitol, a state, and many schools and counties named after him. Not only does he deserve this praise, he earned it.

Writing a good term paper requires that you consider the very things, you are learning in class. The objective of a term paper is to take the course learning materials – everything including textbooks, lectures, extended readings, and anything presented in class – and write a paper that demonstrates solid learning and application of the learning material. Most term papers will require a number of sources, and these sources should begin with the ones from your course. In addition to the sources from your course, you should collect sources from your library database that is supportive of the decisions and ideas you have developed from your coursework. You may even find materials that disagree with your coursework; however, these should be supported with a great deal of evidence or your term paper will lose focus.

In addition, your paper should show real-world application, possibly that you could use this information in your current work environment, or possibly in a volunteer position you held before. You may select to demonstrate learning by creating a proposal that will build upon your learning in a way that suggests how others may use this information to develop better programs, strategies, or even theories.

Finally, your good term paper must demonstrate what you have learned from the course and not simply repeat the information you have gathered. Support your information using in-text citations, but limit the use of quotations. You should be able to provide a number of sources that agree with your statement even without quoting the materials. When you are working on the best term paper, you should try to recall what your instructor felt were the key points to your coursework.

Here is how to write a good college essay that will get you the best grade. Begin your college essay by selecting a general topic from your course materials or from your textbook. This topic may be found in titles of articles you have read or from Chapter titles in your book. A single topic will need to be defined and evaluated, as a good college essay will need to be developed on topic and within the scope of the assignment requirements.

Once you have selected your essay topic and defined it, be certain to develop the topic into a single topic sentence that defines what your paper will cover. This topic sentence will guide your work and allow you to collect effective research that supports youth topic sentence. Your topic must be defended by research but it must also have a defense against arguments that may be brought up against it.

Finally, you should begin your writing after selecting research and writing a quick outline. As you writer your outline begin simple – Introduction, Body, Conclusion, and add in parts as you go – Introduction – topic sentence – definition, Body – history, this study, and so on and so forth. This will enable you to remember each part of the paper effectively. In addition, you can use your outline to put the points you will need from rubric or instructions – which will make them much easier to remember and fulfill.

Finally, as you write your college essay, keep in mind that the primary focus of an essay is to demonstrate that you have learned the information, not to give the information you have learned back to your teacher. Try to find a way to demonstrate application of the information your instructor has taught you.
